About Kwantlen University Institute For Sustainable Horticulture

Kwantlen's Institute for Sustainable Horticulture (ISH), established in 2004, partners with B.C.'s horticultural industries and communities to promote sustainability in horticulture, forestry, and urban landscapes. ISH defines sustainable horticulture as a system that:

  • Conserves, recycles, and renews resources

  • Prevents environmental degradation on-site and off-site

  • Maintains acceptable levels of production and profits

  • Integrates community as a core component

The ISH Research Greenhouse, a 600 m² Venlo-style facility opened in 2011, has four 125 m² compartments for randomized studies. It features hanging troughs, sodium lights, fans, curtains, and irrigation lines with customizable nutrient recipes. Managed by the Argus TITAN Control System, it uses a gas boiler, geothermal heating, and solar panels. One compartment includes blackout curtains for specialized projects.
